Any author who uploads their book in the Kindle store will be met with the question, “Do you want to enroll your book in KDP Select?” It is important that you understand what this means so that you can answer accordingly and comply with the terms if you choose to enroll.
The catch with KDP Select is that you are not allowed to offer your book in any digital format anywhere other than the Amazon Kindle Store while enrolled in the program. That means that selling from your own website or other stores (Barnes & Noble, the iBookstore, etc.) is off limits.
Is a PDF a digital format?
Absolutely! This means that you cannot sell or give away a PDF from your site while having your book enrolled in the KDP Select program. I find that this point is often confusing to writers.
Of course, you can still sell your print book elsewhere. Only digital formats are restricted.
Can I enroll in Kindle Direct Publishing without participating in KDP Select?
Short answer: Yes!
Then what are the perks of KDP Select?
Some of the perks included in the KDP program are:
- You can give your book away for up to five days during each 90 day term you are enrolled.
- Your book will be available in the Amazon Prime Lending Library, and you will receive a payment based on the number of times it is borrowed.
Is it worth it?
You will get varying answers to this question. It may be beneficial for some authors. Generally, I think you are probably better off to be able to sell your book in multiple formats and in multiple locations. But that’s just my opinion. 🙂
