Every Friday, Lisa-Jo Baker hosts 5 Minute Friday, a free writing exercise link up. I participate whenever I can, and it’s fun to see the words that are crafted in such a short span of time. Free writing on a one-word topic, no editing—just let it flow. Today I’m combining 5 Minute Friday with 31 Days of Self-Publishing. . .
It only takes a glance to see the e-book world is growing by leaps and bounds. The sheer quantity of books makes you wonder if yours would get lost in the shuffle.
Look again, and consider—what does your unique voice have to say? That idea for a book that is welling up in your heart, the ideas that spring forth at the most unsuspecting moments. The unique angle on that common theme. Keep looking until you find it.
If you don’t look deeper, you might give up altogether. But with a careful look, a change in perspective, all of a sudden what seemed common takes on a new life of its own. The words become paragraphs and pages and you keep on writing down the thoughts until they become a book.
Don’t cast the idea aside because it seems silly, or because you doubt its value. Maybe that idea is the idea that’s meant to become your first book. You won’t know for sure until you take a deeper look.

During the month of October, we’re chatting about everything self-publishing—design, branding, marketing, formats—you name it! Pulling questions from Design by Insight clients, Re:Write Conference attendees, and you, we’ll take a look at what can often be a confusing and potentially overwhelming subject. Miss a day? Visit the main post for links to each day.
